5-Day Portrait Painting Workshop
Mon July 22 @ 9:00 am - Fri July 26 @ 5:00 pm
Portraiture is one of my very favorite subjects in art. It is not my main practice, but over the years I’ve always done portraits as commissions and as gifts for others.
In this intensive 5-day workshop, we’ll study a wide-range of portraiture styles throughout art history. From Rembrandt to Jenny Saville, from Chaim Soutine to Elizabeth Peyton, from Manet to Chuck Close, we’ll work through painting styles, experiment with compositions and mediums, and integrate the wealth of beauty into our own work.
There will be demonstrations in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, as well as painting techniques like grissaille and underpainting, as well as more contemporary styles. We’ll work through exercises geared towards determining the properties that are most important for you to capture in your subject.
Students are encouraged to finish 3-5 pieces over the course of the workshop. A variety of canvases will be provided, though there will be additional canvases available for purchase. Paints and supplies will be included, though if you have preferred brands or preferred brushes, you are encouraged to bring those (or ship them). There will be an exhibition on the final night of the workshop that will be open to the public for those that wish to exhibit their work.
No previous painting or drawing experience is needed.
